Kokeita puhtaan pöydän Internet -arkkitehtuurilla: Publish / Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm

The objective of this thesis is to evaluate PSIRP (Publish/Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm) network architecture and compare it with the current Internet architecture (TCP/IP). The evaluation is done with a set of experiments and also by reviewing the designs of the architectures. The experiments tell about the behaviour and efficiency of the PSIRP network prototype, and the review reveals the ideas and reasons behind the PSIRP architecture. The goal of the PSIRP research project is to redesign the Internet architecture using the publish/subscribe paradigm. The publish/subscribe paradigm is an information-centric communication model that replaces the send/receive communication model of the current Internet. PSIRP is a clean slate solution in which all communication down to the internet layer follows the publish/subscribe model. We observe that PSIRP responds very well to many of the challenges facing Internet today and in the near future. The publish/subscribe communication paradigm of PSIRP resolves many of the deficiencies of TCP/IP by nature. The experiments compare the connection establishment latency and throughput in data transfer of PSIRP and TCP/IP. Also the influence of the number of the forwarding nodes between the sender and the receiver and the influence of background traffic on PSIRP network are evaluated. Although the experiment results do not show the strengths of PSIRP, the review highlights the potentiality of its ideas.Tässä työssä arvioidaan PSIRP-verkon (Publish/Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm) arkkitehtuuria ja verrataan sitä nykyiseen Internet-arkkitehtuuriin (TCP/IP). Arviointia tehdään sekä kokeellisilla mittauksilla että tarkastelemalla arkkitehtuurien suunnittelua ja rakennetta. Mittaukset antavat tietoa PSIRP -verkkoprototyypin käyttäytymisestä ja tehokkuudesta, ja arkkitehtuurien tarkastelu auttaa ymmärtämään PSIRP:n ideoita ja arkkitehtuuriratkaisuja. PSIRP-tutkimusprojektin tavoitteena on suunnitella Internetin arkkitehtuuri julkaise/tilaa-paradigmaa käyttäen. Julkaise/tilaa-paradigma on informaatiokeskeinen kommunikointimalli, joka korvaa Internetin nykyisen lähetä/vastaanota-kommunikointimallin. PSIRP on puhtaan pöydän ratkaisu, jossa kaikki kommunikaatio verkkokerrokseen asti toimii julkaise/tilaa-mallin mukaisesti. Havaitaan, että PSIRP vastaa todella hyvin Internetin tämänhetkisiin ja lähitulevaisuuden haasteisiin. PSIRP:n julkaise/tilaa-tyyppinen kommunikointiparadigma ratkaisee monet TCP/IP:n puutteet luonnostaan. Mittaukset vertaavat PSIRP:n ja TCP/IP:n yhteydenmuodostuksen viivettä sekä tiedonsiirron nopeutta. Myös lähettäjän ja vastaanottajan välisten koneiden lukumäärän vaikutusta sekä taustaliikenteen vaikutusta PSIRP-verkossa arvioidaan.
