The topic of this thesis is steel portal frame optimization using genetic algorithms (GA). The aim was to create a set of tools for solving the portal frame optimization problem. The real-coded genetic algorithms applied in the optimization were selected from the literature and modified to work with portal frame optimization. A study was performed to find good GA parameters to reduce the time needed for the GA to converge reliably to a reasonable solution. The genetic algorithms selected for this thesis were compared and the best performing algorithm was selected to optimize steel portal frames.
