An overview of invasive exotic orchids in Brazil

Exotic species are becoming invasive in natural habitats. This has been a recurring theme due to it is interaction with native species, changing different traits of the biodiversity. Orchids occupy awfully specific niches, facing threats as to the interference of man in their habitat, however some of them have great invasive potential. From databases, we list 125 potentially invasive species in the world. Of this total, only 16 species had valid records in Brazil, however Vanilla planifolia, V. pampona, Cytropodium polyphyllum, C. flavum, C. paranaense and Polystachya concreta are native, and were not consider, leaving only 10 exotic and invasive species in the country. The higher number of records was found for Oeceoclades maculata, an African orchid with highest success as invasive in the world. It most expressive distribution was in the most anthropized regions of the country (Northeast and Southeast), proving their preference for disturbed environments. The evolutionary patterns of species have conditioned their establishment in certain locations, and the interference in ecosystems has caused several changes in their distribution patterns, such characteristics may not be beneficial in the long run, and even more studies and measures are needed to try to measure these impacts.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Espécies exóticas estão se tornando invasoras em habitats naturais. Este tem sido um tema recorrente devido sua interação com espécies nativas, podendo alterar diversos parâmetros da biodiversidade. As orquídeas ocupam nichos muito específicos, enfrentando ameaças quanto a interferência do homem em seu habitat, porém algumas delas apresentam grande potencial invasor. A partir de bases de dados, listamos 125 espécies potencialmente invasoras no mundo. Desse total apenas 16 espécies apresentaram registros no Brasil, porém Vanilla planifolia, V. pampona, Cytropodium polyphyllum, C. flavum, C. paranaense e Polystachya concreta são nativas, não sendo consideradas validas, restando apenas 10 espécies exóticas e invasoras no país. O maior número de registros (873) foi encontrado para O. maculata, uma orquídea africana com maior sucesso invasor no mundo. Sua distribuição foi mais expressiva nas regiões mais antropizadas do país (Nordeste e Sudeste), comprovando sua preferência por ambientes perturbados. Os padrões evolutivos das espécies condicionaram seu estabelecimento em determinados locais, sendo que as interferências nos ecossistemas têm causado diversas mudanças em seus padrões de distribuição, tais características poderão não ser benéficas ao longo prazo, sendo ainda mais necessários estudos e medidas para tentar mensurar estes impactos
