Religija ir valstybė šiuolaikinėje Turkijoje: ateistų požiūris

There has been a resurgence of religion, often in its politicized forms, all around the world, with the exception of Western Europe in the post-Cold War era. As a result, the attention given to relations between religion and the state raised both in and out of academia. The study aims to explore the attitudes of atheists concerning the relationship between religion and the state in contemporary Turkey. A significant majority of Turkey’s population identifies as Muslim and the state provides religious services only for its Sunni-Muslim population. Therefore, the study investigates the influence of Islam on contemporary Turkish society, the state, and also the atheists who constitute a minority in Turkey. The study had a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 self-identified atheists from different backgrounds in three different cities of Turkey, namely, Istanbul, Izmir, and Trabzon. Thematic analysis was applied, and themes were formed, in order to make sense of the data. In the study, the concept of hegemony by Antonio Gramsci was used in order to analyze the hegemonic position of Islam in contemporary Turkish society. Other related concepts such as counter-hegemony, common sense, and integral state were also discussed throughout the paper. Rather than a Marxist view of a clear-cut dichotomy of classes as ruling and ruled, a Bourdieuan approach, where society is thought to be consisting of many “fields,” including religion and many groups that strive to gain more power within these fields, was adopted. The study revealed that the attitudes of atheists towards religion, and also the relationship between religion and the state, are diverse. However, a strong hegemony of Islam in contemporary Turkey was underlined by the informants. They stated that everybody is expected to live like Muslims, and this expectation gets more intense with the actions of the state, which normalizes being Muslim and serves only the interest of the majority, ignoring other groups in Turkey. The informants considered themselves a minority group that is marginalized by the relations between religion and the state in contemporary Turkey. They also discussed their strategies for survival. The study contributed to the understanding of relationship between religion and state in contemporary Turkey based on attitudes of atheists, a group that deviates from the majority of Turkish society based on their irreligious views.Pasaulyje, išskyrus Vakarų Europą, Šaltojo Karo pabaiga nešė religijos, ypač politizuotų jos formų, atsigavimą. Absoliuti dauguma Turkijos gyventojų tapatina save su musulmonais, o ir valstybė numato religines paslaugas tik musulmonų sunitų bendruomenėms. Todėl šis tyrimas nagrinėja Islamo įtaką šiuolaikinei Turkijos visuomenei, valstybe ir ateistams, kurie Turkijoje sudaro mažumą. Tyrime naudojama kokybinė prieiga. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad ateistų požiūris į religiją ir religijos ir valstybės santykį nėra vienalytis. Tačiau respondentai pabrėžė stiprią Islamo hegemoniją šiuolaikinėje Turkijoje. Jie teigė, kad yra tikimasi, kad visi gyvens kaip musulmonai, ir šie lūkesčiai stiprėja dėl valstybės veiksmų. Valstybė normalizuoja buvimą musulmonu ir tarnauja tik jų interesams, ignoruodama kitas Turkijos visuomenės grupes. Respondentai laiko save mažuma, kurią marginalizuoja valstybės ir religijos santykis šiuolaikinėje Turkijoje. Jie taip pat paminėjo savo išlikimo strategijas.
