ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES APPLICATION AT THE MUNICIPAL WASTE LANDFILLS IN ALYTUS DISTRICT

Nowadays the waste-free and environmentally friendly technologies are more and more implemented in production processes; however, the waste is consisted during the process of use and production. Annually near 333 thousands tons of innocuous waste and about 117 thousands tons of hazardous industrial waste are consisted in Lithuania. The aim of these master theses is an evaluation of the existing landfills in Alytus region, evaluation of effectiveness of environmental measures which are applied in these landfills. The tasks of the work were: to review the waste condition in Lithuania; to review the landfills situation in Lithuania; to explore the existing conditions of landfills in Alytus district and the applied environmental measures; to choose data about landfills of Alytus district; to consider the applied environmental measures in regional landfills of other countries also of Lithuanian; to sift the efficiency of environmental measures in landfills of Alytus district; to propose the recommendations for applied of environmental measures in landfills of Alytus district. The results of analysis of existing condition of landfills in Alytus district are presented in this paper, also the applied environmental measures at these landfills are described. There are 42 landfills in Alytus district, the total volume of waste 52440 m3 is accumulated in these landfills. The total area of landfills is known only of 24 landfills (the total area is 20,3 ha). At this time are operated only three landfills (Alovė, Giluičiai and Praniūnai). The simple environmental measures such as the fencing, protective signs for entrance, the preventive ditches and the bores for control of groundwater quality are applied in mentioned landfills. It was determined that in all other landfills any environmental measures are not applied. It was calculated that nowadays about 11486 m3 of leachate are produced in all landfills of Alytus region. The covering of landfills (for biggest landfills of region) or the transporting of waste from small landfills are the most effective methods to minimize the negative impact of landfills on environment. An estimations showed that the amount of leachate produced may decrease even up to nine times if the biggest landfills are covered and the waste from small landfills are transported away from the sites. Also the other possible environmental measures, what may be applied at the landfills for minimizing the negative impact of landfills on environment are discussed in these master theses.Žemės ūkio akademijaVytauto Didžiojo universiteta
