In December 2012, the president of Kazakhstan, N. Nazarbayev, announced the transfer of the Kazakh language from Cyrillic to the Latin script starting from 2025. The current study aims to contribute to studies of orthography selection and standardization and provide a critical analysis of discourses that underlie the debate over the Kazakh script reform based on data collected from online newspaper publications and open governmental sources. During the data analysis it was revealed that the following six discourses surround the Latinization reform in Kazakhstan: political, modernizing, scientific, economic, pedagogical and historical.
