Lubinai (Lupinus L.) yra reikšmingi pupiniai augalai, turintys didelį biologinį ir ekonominį potencialą. Priklausomai nuo lubinų rūšies ir veislės sėklų baltymingumas yra 28,6–40,1 proc. (Subačius, 1956; Lazauskas, 1970; Hove ir kt., 1978; Maknickienė, 2007). Lubinai auginami daugelyje pasaulio šalių. Pasauliniu mastu 2013 m. daugiausia lubinų buvo auginama Australijoje – 70 proc. nuo bendros pasaulinės lubinų produkcijos kiekio, Europos šalyse – 30 proc. Europos Sąjungos šalyse daugiausia lubinų produkcijos išauginama Vokietijoje ir Lenkijoje.
