Dermacentor reticulatus erkės yra obligatiniai hematofaginiai ektoparazitai, per paskutiniuosius dešimtmečius patraukę mokslinės bendruomenės dėmesį. Turintys 3-jų šeimininkų gyvenimo ciklą geba parazituoti platų šeimininkų spektrą, įskaitant graužikus, naminius gyvūnus, galvijus ir retai žmones bei paukščius. Kaip ir kitos Europos erkių rūšys, šie parazitai pasižymi vektorinėmis savybėmis gebantys per nešti patogenus sukeliančius Laimo ligą, erkinį encefalitą, anaplazmozę ir babeziozę.
