PURPOSE OF THE STUDY This thesis examines how financial reporting could better support the managerial decision-making in the case company and how SSBI tools (Self-Service Business Intelligence) could be utilized in their financial reporting. The purpose of the study is to create a construction consisting of practical suggestions for the case company’s management how to develop the current financial reporting based on the empirical findings and prior literature. The use of financial information in managerial decision-making is studied based on Hall (2010). This study aspires to contribute to prior literature by studying how financial information is used in the case company. DATA AND METHODOLOGY The study method is constructive case study. The constructive approach was chosen because the case company wanted to develop their financial reporting to serve better the information needs of the managerial decision-making. Additionally, the case company had deployed a new ERP system and a SSBI tool. The case company wanted to investigate the possibilities that these new technologies provide in financial reporting. The study is qualitative, and its empiric evidence consists of 9 semi-structured interviews and internal material of the case company. The interviewees included the entire management team of the case company, one corporate level financial manager and two IT managers. The development suggestions for management’s financial reporting are based on the interview results. FINDINGS AND CONTRIBUTION OF THE STUDY It was seen in the empirical findings that the case company’s managers are currently receiving all the information they need for their decision-making. The financial reports are beneficial, but they could be better formulated, and the core information should be more clearly presented. Real-time reporting was another development theme which emerged from the results. The findings of this study are mostly congruent with the theory by Hall (2010): The internal financial information is mostly used to form an overall picture of the business environment, information from different sources is combined and both internal and external information support each other, and financial information is primarily communicated verbally. A deviation to the theory by Hall (2010) was that the findings of this study did not support the universality of the accounting language. The managers of the case company argued that accounting terminology mostly complicates communication between managers with different backgrounds. Therefore, the results from this thesis contribute to prior literature by adding empirical evidence to contradict Hall’s (2010) argument. Four development suggestions were formed based on the empirical findings. The suggestions were introduced to the case company and it will consider deploying them.TUTKIMUKSEN TARKOITUS Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten talousraportointi voisi paremmin tukea case-yrityksen johdon päätöksentekoa ja miten SSBI-työkaluja (Self-Service Business Intelligence) voisi hyödyntää raportoinnin toteutuksessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on luoda konstruktio, joka sisältää käytännön ehdotuksia johdolle talousraportoinnin kehittämiseen perustuen tutkimusaineistoon ja aiempaan kirjallisuuteen. Talousinformaation käyttöä johdon päätöksenteon tukena tutkitaan pohjautuen Hallin (2010) teoriaan perustuvia ehdotuksia vasten. Tutkimus pyrkii täydentämään kirjallisuudessa olevaa tutkimusaukkoa kuvaamalla tietyn case-yrityksen talousinformaation hyödyntämistä käytännössä. AINEISTO JA METODOLOGIA Tutkimus on toteutettu konstruktiivisena tutkimuksena case-yrityksessä. Konstruktiivinen tutkimus valittiin, koska case-yrityksen talousraportointia haluttiin kehittää vastaamaan paremmin johdon päätöksenteon tuen tarpeita. Case-yritys oli lisäksi ottanut käyttöön uuden ERP-järjestelmän sekä SSBI-työkalun, joiden antamia mahdollisuuksia talousraportoinnin kehittämiseen haluttiin tutkia. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen ja sen tutkimusaineisto koostuu 9 puolistrukturoidusta haastattelusta sekä case-yrityksen sisäisestä materiaalista. Haastateltaviin kuului case-yrityksen johtoryhmä kokonaisuudessaan sekä yksi konsernitason johtaja ja 2 IT-johtajaa. Tutkimuksen tuloksena tehdyt ehdotukset johdon talousraportoinnin kehittämiseen pohjautuvat haastatteluiden tuloksiin. TULOKSET JA KONTRIBUUTIO Tutkimusaineiston tuloksista huomattiin, että case-yrityksen johto saa jo kykyään tarvitsemansa tiedon päätöksentekonsa tueksi. Talousraportit ovat hyödyllisiä, mutta niissä oleva olennainen tieto voisi tulla selkeämmin esiin. Lisäksi reaaliaikainen talousinformaatio nousi kehityskohteeksi. Tutkimuksen tulokset olivat enimmäkseen linjassa Hallin (2010) teoriaehdotusten kanssa: Yrityksen sisäistä talousinformaatiota käytetään enimmäkseen taloudellisen kokonaiskuvan hahmottamiseksi, eri lähteistä saatua informaatiota yhdistellään ja niillä on toisiaan tukeva vaikutus sekä talousinformaatiosta kommunikoidaan suurelta osin suullisesti. Poikkeama Hallin (2010) ehdotuksiin oli, että taloussanaston universaaliuden ei katsota edistävän kommunikaatiota eri taustaisten johtajien kanssa. Täten tämän tutkimuksen tulokset täydentävät aiempaa kirjallisuutta tuomalla esiin Hallin (2010) väittämän vastaista tutkimusaineistoa. Haastatteluiden pohjalta muodostettiin ehdotuksia johdon talousraportoinnin kehittämiseen ja ne esiteltiin case-yritykselle. Case-yrityksessä harkitaan ehdotuksia
