The purpose of this research was to investigate the formation of the surface mark that occurs during roll grinding. The aim was to find out what factors in the grinding process affect to the surface mark. Roll grinding requires extremely high standards of accuracy, because when the rolls are m operation, even small errors in the dimensional accuracy might cause problems. The surface mark examined here is more of an optical surface quality error than a dimensional error in the roll. The hypothesis was that it is a grinding vibration based problem, which is a usual reason for similar surface marks.
