Fullerenes are a class of spherical or ellipsoidal nanosized molecules consisting exclusively of carbon atoms. The most common type of fullerene in nanotechnology research is C60, which is totally insoluble in water. To increase the solubility of C60 hydrophilic functional groups such as -OH, -COOH or -NH2 can be attached on the fullerene surface. In this work we use a water soluble fullerene derivative, fullerol C60(OH)20. The purpose of this work is to study the interactions between fullerol and oligonucleotides, DNA and RNA, using molecular dynamics simulation method. An understanding of the effects that fullerols have on oligonucleotides is required because fullerols are tested to be used in nanomedicine, for example drug delivery...
