Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) have received a lot of attention in recent years, both in scientific literature as well as in electronics industry. In the scientific community much effort has gone recently to cooling of nanomechanical resonators, i.e. beams or cantilevers with dimensions in the nanometer scale, after it was appreciated that it should be possible to cool down the mechanical modes of these structures all the way to their quantum ground state. This would open a wealth of possible NEMS experiments as well as be a fundamental test about the limits of quantum mechanics.
