Varaosalogistiikka lentokoneiden huoltotoiminnassa

Tight competition in the aviation industry and increasing fuel costs have created pressure for controlling costs in aircraft maintenance, because airline customers demand higher cost efficiency and cost transparency from their maintenance organizations. Due to history and special characteristics of the aviation industry maintenance organizations face significant challenges in controlling capital tied to aircraft spare parts and components. The aim of this thesis is to find out, how a maintenance service company operating in the aviation industry should manage and control logistics of repairable spare parts in order to decrease and improve the use of capital tied to spare parts. The research is a case study that examines logistic processes and operating models of the case company operating in the aviation industry. Literature survey, direct observation, theme interviews, qualitative and quantitative data analysis are used as research methods in this study. The aim of using multiple data collection methods was to improve the reliability of this study. In the first part of the case study the current processes and operating models related to repairing and servicing repairable parts are charted based on interviews and direct observation of the work performed. Five operating models were also identified in this part of the study that have profound effect on management of spare part logistics and also capital tied to spare parts inventories. The five operating models were described in detail and at the same time their effect on management and control on spare part logistics was analysed. In the second part of the case study the interview material collected for the internal logistics development projects of the case company were analysed. Based on the analysis the recommendations for developing spare part logistics were formulated. The recommendations focus on shortening the turn around time of the repair process and improving inventory management. Due to the nature of case study research the recommendations are primarily suited for improving operations in the case company. The recommendations given in this study must lead to concrete changes is the current ways of operating so that the final aim of decreasing and improving the use of capital tied to spare parts can be reached.Ilmailualan kireä kilpailutilanne ja nousevat polttoainekustannukset ovat luoneet paineita kustannusten hallintaan myös lentokoneiden huoltotoiminnassa, sillä lentoyhtiöasiakkaat edellyttävät huolto-organisaatioilta yhä suurempaa kustannustehokkuutta ja kustannusrakenteiden läpinäkyvyyttä. Ilmailualan historiasta ja erityispiirteistä johtuen huolto-organisaatioilla on merkittäviä haasteita lentokoneiden varaosiin ja -laitteisiin sitoutuneiden pääomien hallinnassa. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten ilmailualalla toimivan huoltopalveluyrityksen tulisi ohjata ja hallita korjauskiertoisten varaosien logistiikkaa, jotta varaosiin sitoutunutta pääomaa saadaan vähennettyä ja pääoman käyttöä tehostettua. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan tapaustutkimus, jossa perehdytään ilmailualalla toimivan kohdeyrityksen varaosalogistiikan prosesseihin ja toimintamalleihin. Tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin kirjallisuuskatsausta, havainnointia, teemahaastatteluja, aineistopohjaista analyysiä sekä tilastoanalyysiä. Tutkimuksen luotettavuutta pyrittiin parantamaan hyödyntämällä useita erilaisia tiedonkeruumenetelmiä. Tapaustutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa toteutettujen haastattelujen ja toiminnan havainnoinnin perusteella tehtiin prosessikartoitus korjauskiertoisten osien ja laitteiden korjausprosessista kohdeyrityksen omilla korjaamoilla sekä alihankintakorjauksessa. Kartoitusvaiheessa tunnistettiin myös viisi toimintamallia, joiden todettiin vaikuttavan merkittävästi varaosalogistiikan hallintaan sekä varaosavarastoihin sitoutuneeseen pääomaan. Toimintamallit kuvattiin yksityiskohtaisesti analysoiden samalla niiden merkitystä varaosalogistiikan ohjauksen ja hallinnan kannalta. Tutkimuksen toisessa vaiheessa analysoitiin kohdeyrityksessä logistiikan kehityshankkeita varten kerättyjä haastatteluaineistoja. Aineistoanalyysin pohjalta luotiin kehitysehdotukset, joilla tunnistettuihin varaosalogistiikan haasteisiin voidaan vastata. Kehitysehdotuksilla pyritään nopeuttamaan varaosien korjausprosessia sekä kehittämään varastojen hallintaa. Tapaustutkimuksen luonteen takia esitetyt kehitysehdotukset soveltuvat pääasiassa vain kohdeyrityksen toiminnan kehittämiseen. Tutkimuksessa esitettyjen kehitysehdotusten tulee johtaa konkreettisiin muutoksiin toimintatavoissa, jotta tutkimuksen lopullinen tavoite, eli varaosiin sitoutuneen pääoman vähentäminen ja pääoman käytön tehostaminen, voidaan saavuttaa
