In the literature survey that makes up the first part of this master's thesis different methods to estimate the magnitude of extreme floods and the effects of climate change on extreme floods were reviewed. In the experimental part of this thesis two different methods for estimating extreme floods were evaluated. The methods are frequency distributions and model calculations based on precipitation. Three different frequency distributions, Gumbel, Pearson type III and log-Pearson type III, were fitted to eight discharge data samples from different parts of Finland.
