The Process Theory of Internationalization (PTI) posits that internationalization is a slow and incremental process (Johanson & Vahlne 1977). The theory explains this mainly by the central role of experiental knowledge (that is, knowledge that can only be learned through experience) during internationalization. According to PTI companies learn three types of knowledge through internationalization: (1) internationalization knowledge, (2) foreign business knowledge, and (3) foreign institutional knowledge (Eriksson et al. 1997).
