In search of the genetic basis of song learning in birds. Analysis of structural characteristics of song in crossed races of canaries.

É sabido que em muitas espécies a canção produzida depende de um processo de aprendizagem vocal. Esta aprendizagem é influenciada pela apresentação de diferentes estímulos durante períodos sensíveis de aquisição sensorial, resultando em diferentes canções produzidas pela ave. Não obstante, as aves preferem aprender canções pertencentes à própria espécie, e a sua capacidade e escolha na aprendizagem é condicionada pela sua base genética. Adicionalmente, experiências de hibridação mostraram que diferenças nas características do canto possuem uma componente genética. Este trabalho procura melhorar o conhecimento sobre os mecanismos genéticos responsáveis pelas diferenças no canto das aves, através da fenotipagem de aves resultantes de cruzamentos. Para tal, foram cruzados canários pertencentes a uma variedade que sofreu selecção artificial ao longo do tempo pelo canto, com canários que não sofreram essa selecção. A variedade que sofreu selecção pelo canto, o Waterslager-Malinois, apresenta canções com uma alta taxa de repetição e uma gama de frequências mais baixa que as restantes variedades de canários, e possuí uma deficiência congénita auditiva afetando frequências acima dos 2kHz. Simultaneamente, outras partes do seu canto são semelhantes às outras variedades. Os híbridos resultantes desse cruzamento foram tutoreados com canções de ambas as variedades em partes equitativas. Verificou-se que cada híbrido demonstrou a capacidade de aprender sílabas de ambos os tipos de tutores. No entanto, houve variação entre indivíduos, que estará associada às diferentes combinações da componente genética herdada das duas variedades alvo dos cruzamentos. Adicionalmente, híbridos com constituintes genéticos exclusivos a cada variedade, permitirão avaliar a importância de cada componente genético dos progenitores nas características do seu reportório em estudos genéticos.Singing is a form of communication with high importance in birds, being regularly used in competition between individuals and choice of partners. It is known that in many species the song produced depends on a process of vocal learning. This learning is influenced by the presentation of different stimuli during sensitive periods of sensory acquisition, resulting in different songs produced by the bird. Nevertheless, birds prefer to learn songs belonging to their own species, and their ability and choice in learning is conditioned by their genetic basis. In addition, hybridization experiments have shown that differences in singing characteristics have a genetic component. This work seeks to improve knowledge about the genetic mechanisms responsible for the differences in birdsong, through the phenotyping of birds resulting from crossings. To this end, canaries belonging to a variety that underwent artificial selection over time through singing, were crossed with canaries that did not undergo that selection. The variety that was selected for singing, Waterslager-Malinois, presents songs with a high repetition rate and a lower frequency range than the other varieties of canaries, and has a congenital hearing impairment affecting frequencies above 2kHz. At the same time, other parts of its singing are similar to other varieties. The hybrids resulting from this crossing were tutored with songs of both varieties in equal parts. It was found that each hybrid demonstrated the ability to learn syllables from both types of tutors. However, there was variation between individuals, which will be associated with different combinations of the genetic component inherited from the two target varieties of the crosses. Additionally, hybrids with exclusive genetic constituents for each variety, will allow to assess the importance of each genetic component of the parents in the characteristics of their repertoire in genetic studies
