Introduction: There is substantial evidence suggesting youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are much more likely to be imprisoned than youth without a FASD. In response to the impact undiagnosed FASD may have on the individual and their management in the criminal justice system, there has been an urgent call to understand the extent FASD may affect youth in detention. The aim is to describe the protocol used in the first Australian estimate of FASD among youth in detention including methods for engaging the community and navigating research through existing correctional setting protocols.
