This study examines the effects of individualism on the social norms of marriage and cohabitation, how people feel about intimate relationships and how important these relationships are for the experienced wellbeing and happiness. Four European countries, all with varying degrees of individualistic influence, have been compared by using data from the European Social Survey to determine if there is any difference in how important it is perceived to beliving together with someone. It is already established that marriage has a positive effect on wellbeing and happiness, but what is studied here is whether the effect differs according to different social values in different countries.
