Video calling and desktop sharing (VCDS) as a research method in Education

This session looks at internet video calling and desktop-sharing as a research method used in a small-scale doctoral study of teachers planning for learning at a time of immense curriculum change in schools – the 2014 shift from ICT to Computing (which includes Computer Science) in the UK, when the vast majority of the in-service teaching workforce were not graduates in the new subject area. In terms of methodology, there is a strong methodological heritage in digital, visual and ethnographic research methods. This is interesting because, at the time of the study, online research methods themselves were very much seen as a ‘methodological frontier’. In our current Covid-19 circumstances, the dramatic shift to online learning and research means that there is real interest in exploring online research methods. Another area of interest in this session will be the format of the journal article itself. This open-access journal is one that requires a significant video element to be part of the work submitted, which attendees may not have encountered before, and may warrant interest from those whose work may not be disseminated as effectively in a traditional journal format.
