A doença de Parkinson (PD) (PD - Parkinson Disease, MIM # 168600) é uma doença neurodegenerativa caracterizada por morte de neurônios dopaminérgicos da parte compacta da substancia negra do mesencéfalo (mDAN). Pacientes com PD exibem frequência aumentada de mutações no gene GBA, que codifica a enzima beta-glicosidase ácida (ou glicocerebrosidase - GCase) deficiente na Doença de Gaucher (GD), indicando uma forte associação entre as duas patologias. Atualmente não se conhece o mecanismo pelo qual mutações em GBA aumentam a susceptibilidade à degeneração neuronal.
