On the margins of faith: Umbanda and Candomblé and their confrontations against violence and discrimination against Afro-Brazilian social practices, in Uberlândia / MG (1980-2000)

Afro-Brazilian religions, which were born in Brazil from enslaved Africans or who are connected, in some way, to African cultures, are repeatedly violated by Brazilians of various other religious denominations, mainly Christian, or by the public authorities who, in most of the time, it does not take protective measures to ensure freedom of religious expression. The past 20 years have seen an increase in this violence. Religious hatred has been recurrent, explicit and increasingly affronting. The objective of this text is, from a historical perspective, to understand religious violence against Umbanda and Candomblé, as a facet of racism that demonizes, persecutes and, at the limit, promotes the extermination of the population and the black conscience. Analyzing the memories and speeches constructed by orality that mark religiosity, interviews, prayers, sung points, in confrontation with speeches and episodes where hatred and conflict are evident (newspaper articles, murders attributed to saints' parents), we understand that Uberlândia, although permeated by the ideal of the Marvel city, is the place where racial conflict is evidenced in a veiled way and that hides between its folds, not only a large contingent of organized black population, but also the racism and conflicts inherent to its existence.Pesquisa sem auxílio de agências de fomentoDissertação (Mestrado)As religiões afro-brasileiras, que nasceram no Brasil a partir de africanos escravizados ou que estão ligadas, de alguma forma, às culturas africanas, são recorrentemente violentadas por brasileiros de diversas outras denominações religiosas, principalmente as cristãs, e também pelo poder público que, na maioria das vezes, não toma medidas protetivas que assegurem a liberdade de expressão religiosa. Os últimos 20 anos assistiram ao aumento dessa violência. O ódio religioso tem sido recorrente, explícito e cada vez mais afrontoso. O objetivo deste texto é, a partir de uma perspectiva histórica, compreender a violência religiosa contra a Umbanda e o Candomblé como uma faceta do racismo que demoniza, persegue e, no limite, promove o extermínio da população e da consciência negra. Utilizamos como metodologia a História oral analisando as memórias e os discursos construídos pela oralidade que marcam a religiosidade por meio de entrevistas, orações, pontos cantados, em confronto com discursos e episódios onde o ódio e o conflito se evidenciam (matérias de jornais, assassinatos atribuídos a pais de santos), entendemos que Uberlândia, embora permeada do ideal da cidade Maravilha, é um lugar onde o conflito racial se evidencia de forma velada e que esconde entre suas dobras, não só um grande contingente de população negra organizada, mas também o racismo e os conflitos inerente a sua existência
