Financial restriction in publicly traded companies in B3's electricity sector and the cost of capital of third parties

In order for companies to be able to operate and grow satisfactorily in the market they need a given amount of capital that would be sufficient to expand business and implement projects; therefore, they need to be considered as financially unrestrained. Market and intel users increasingly demand for less asymmetric intel and, in this context, observance of corporate governance rules that stratifies the companies in different levels can provide best practices of intel transparency and representativity of minority shareholders in the councils, reducing the risk of potential funding providers and, consequently, a capital cost reduction. This study identified the relation of financial restriction level and third-party capital costs of electrical energy companies listed in the Brazilian stock market, B3. Also, we analyzed how listed companies’ corporate governance level impact this relationship. Analysis was done in a sample of 38 companies (negotiated in B3) of the energy sector, from 2009 to 2019. The electrical energy sector was selected based on its highest gross debt in Brazil. The results suggest that, for sample companies of the electrical sector, the variables that best explain the third-party capital costs (TCC) are market value, with a negative relation with TCC, and asset size, with a positive relation with TCC. The ranking the company in higher level of corporative governance (in the New Market of B3) strengthened the results and turned the statistical model more predictive.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Para que empresas tenham a possibilidade de operar e ter um crescimento satisfatório no mercado, elas necessitam de uma quantidade de capital que seja suficiente para expandir seus negócios e implementar seus projetos, e para isso, precisam ser vistas como irrestritas financeiramente. O mercado e os usuários das informações exigem cada vez mais uma menor assimetria informacional. Neste contexto, o atendimento a regras de governança tende a reduzir o risco de fornecedores de recursos e, consequentemente, leva a uma redução no custo de capital. O presente estudo tem como objetivo identificar a relação entre o grau de restrição financeira e o custo de capital de terceiros das empresas do setor de energia elétrica, listadas na B3. De forma secundária, buscou-se verificar se o nível de Governança Corporativa na qual a empresa está listada impacta nessa relação. Procedeu-se a uma análise de dados em painel, composta por uma amostra de 38 empresas do setor de energia, negociados na B3, no período de 2009 a 2019. A escolha do setor de energia elétrica ocorreu por ser considerado um dos setores com maior dívida bruta no Brasil. Os resultados sugeriram que, para as empresas amostrais (pertencentes ao setor elétrico), as variáveis que melhor explicam o custo de capital de terceiros são o valor de mercado, tendo uma relação negativa ao CCT, e o tamanho do ativo, tendo uma relação positiva com o CCT. A listagem da empresa em nível diferenciado de governança corporativa fortaleceu os resultados e tornou o modelo estatístico mais preditivo
