Inclusive education as the turning point for the dignified life course of children with disabilities

Knygos DOI https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003016090From the very early age, children with disabilities were oriented to specialized medical, educational or residential settings, due to the lack of accommodations in mainstream services and lack of support to families. This has usually determined the discriminatory life course for a person with disability, from special education, living with parents in adult age and finishing their life in residential institutions. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) of the United Nations obligate the States parties to invest in family-support measures, inclusive early intervention and quality inclusive education. Socially and educationally inclusive childhood is a prerequisite for independent living for a person with disability.
