Solar Energy at the New Karolinska Solna

In today’s society climate change has grown to one of the largest global issues. To reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, large changes of the energy system are required. An increasingly popular solution is investments in local production of renewable energy resources like wind, solar or geothermal power. The following report examines the possibility for implementing a solar power plant on the new hospital Nya Karolinska Solna. Two different technologies for extraction of solar energy has been studied, solar thermal collectors to meet the need of heating and solar cells to satisfy the need for electricity linked to operating the hospital building. Result shows that an investment in a solar cell plant for electricity production is the most profitable solution. The plant will have the capacity to supply electricity for operating the ward floors to 46, 4 % of the yearly needs. As no need for external heat exists during five out of 12 months, the full potential of the solar thermal collector plant can’t be utilized. This leads to coverage of external heat Need of only 14,1 % over the year. The most profitable solar cell plant generates a net present value of 2,3 MSEK, the corresponding number for the most profitable solar thermal collector plant is ‐3,7 MSEK. The result concludes that an investment in a solar cell plant is the most fitting for Nya Karolinska Solna. In addition to contributing to achievements of environmental goals, the plant will also generate positive cash flows resulting in a total profit on the investment. Moreover, the study has discovered that postponing the investment to the future is viable, as it will additionally increase the profitability of the investment due to further development of solar cells.I dagens samhälle har klimatfrågan vuxit fram som ett av de stora globala problemen. För att minska växthusgasutsläppen och beroendet av fossil energi behöver energisystemet samtliga steg ses över, från att öka produktionen från förnybara energikällor till smartare distributionskanaler och effektivare energianvändning. En lösning som oftast lyfts fram är investeringar i kraftverk som producerar förnybar energi lokalt, exempelvis kraftverk som utvinner energi från sol, vind eller på geotermisk väg. Denna rapport utreder huruvida det planerade universitetssjukhuset Nya Karolinska Solna kan utnyttja solenergi inom sitt egna energisystem. Två olika tekniker, solfångare för att täcka delar av värmebehovet och solceller för att täcka delar av elbehovet, har undersökts. Undersökningen gav att en investering i en solcellsanläggning är det mest lönsamma alternativet. Fastighetselen på våningarna med vårdavdelning skulle täckas till 46,4 % sett till årets totala behov. Då externt värmebehov inte existerar under fem av årets 12 månader ges att solfångaranläggningen inte kan producera optimalt. Det ger att endast 14,1 % av det externa värmebehovet under ett år täcks. Den solcellsanläggning med bäst lönsamhet genererar på 2,3 MSEK medan motsvarande siffra för den mest lönsamma solfångaranläggningen är ‐3,7 MSEK. Av resultatet dras slutsatsen att en solcellsanläggning är den bästa investeringen för Nya Karolinska Solna. Forutom att bidra till att uppfylla miljökrav genererar anläggningen positiva kassaflöden som tillsammans ger en konkurrenskraftig förtjänst på investeringsbeloppet. Utredningen har även funnit att ett alternativ till en investering kan vara att vänta några år, då en fortsatt teknikutvecklingen av solceller med följden av fortsatt prisfall kan ge en kraftigt ökad lönsamhet.
