Comparison of the two procedures to measure jealousy as a consequence of infidelity

Curs: 2019/2020Infidelity (emotional and sexual) occurs when a third person appears in a relationship and one of the partners breaks the commitment previously established. Throughout the literature, two main theoretical proposals have been put forward to explain the difference in romantic jealousy in men and women: the evolutionary theory and the sociocognitive theory; each employs a different form of evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to see which type of infidelity causes more jealousy between both sexes, taking into account the two forms of measurement: forced disjunctive choice vs. choice on a continuous scale (Likert). The participants of this study are 96 students of Psychology of the UJI between 19 and 33 years old (mean= 22,59, DT= 5,81) equalized by sex. The data are obtained by passing the Inventory of Personal and Sociodemographic Variables and another Inventory of Jealousy, in a modified version of the one proposed by Buss et al (1999). The results show that there are significant differences between men and women when they have to choose one of the infidelities that causes them the most discomfort, however, when continuous measures are used, the evolutionary hypothesis is rejected, thus, neither men nor women show significant differences when faced with emotional infidelity.La infidelidad (emocional y sexual) se produce cuando en una relación aparece una tercera persona, y uno de los miembros de la pareja rompe el compromiso establecido anteriormente. A lo largo de la literatura se han posicionado dos propuestas teóricas principales que explican la diferencia de celos románticos en hombres y mujeres: la teoría evolucionista y la teoría sociocognitiva; cada una emplea una forma distinta de evaluación. Por ello, en el presente estudio se pretende ver qué tipo de infidelidad provoca más celos entre ambos sexos, teniendo en cuenta las dos formas de mediciones: elección disyuntiva forzosa vs elección en escala continua (Likert). Los participantes de este estudio son 96 estudiantes de Psicología de la UJI de edades comprendidas entre 19 y 33 años (media= 22,59, DT= 5,81) igualados por sexo. Los datos se obtienen pasando el Inventario de variables personales y sociodemográficas y otro Inventario de Celos, en una versión modificada de la propuesta por Buss et al. (1999). Los resultados muestran que existen diferencias significativas entre hombres y mujeres cuando deben elegir una de las infidelidades que les causa más molestias, sin embargo, cuando se emplea las medidas continuas, la hipótesis evolucionista es rechazada, así, ni los hombres ni las mujeres muestran diferencias significativas ante la infidelidad de tipo emocional
