PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN INSTITUTIONALIZED ELDERLY PEOPLE: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Treball Final de Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048. Curs: 2019/2020The aim of this study is to review the current state of research on well-being and quality of life in institutionalized older people. Following the PRISMA method, a systematic review of the scientific literature from 2014 to 2020 of the articles included in the following databases was carried out: MEDLINE, PubMed, PubPsych, PsyInfo and PsycArticles. A general search was made for those articles that included the following keywords "elderly", "well-being", "quality of life", "vital satisfaction", "social support" and "nursing home", and from there on, more and more specific searches were made. Of the 473 studies found, seven met the inclusion criteria and were analysed in depth in order to meet the objective of this study. The review showed that variables such as participation in activities, social relationships, positive attitudes and physical environment have a positive impact on well-being and quality of life, so the review articles all go in the same direction. Finally, the objective was successfully achieved and allowed to have a current overview of well-being and quality of life in institutionalized elderly people. It should be noted that, in the present work, there are limitations such as the heterogeneity of the instruments used in the articles analysed and that for future research the review would be more useful if other points of view were included such as those of professionals in the field of psychogerontology and the relatives of the residents.Este estudio tiene por objetivo revisar el estado actual de las investigaciones sobre el bienestar y la calidad de vida en las personas mayores institucionalizadas. Se realizó, siguiendo el método PRISMA, una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica a partir del año 2014 hasta el año 2020 de los artículos incluidos en las siguientes bases de datos: MEDLINE, PubMed, PubPsych, PsyInfo y PsycArticles. Se hizo una búsqueda general de aquellos artículos que incluyeran las siguientes palabras clave “elderly”, “well-being”, “quality of life”, “vital satisfaction”, “social support” y “nursing home”, para a partir de ahí ir realizando búsquedas cada vez más específicas. De los 473 estudios encontrados, siete cumplieron los criterios de inclusión y fueron analizados con profundidad para poder responder al objetivo de este estudio. La revisión mostró que variables como la participación en actividades, relaciones sociales, actitudes positivas y entorno físico tienen un impacto positivo en el bienestar y en la calidad de vida, de manera que los artículos de la revisión van todos en la misma dirección. Finalmente, el objetivo se cumplió con éxito y permitió tener una visión panorámica actual del bienestar y de la calidad de vida en personas mayores institucionalizadas. Destacar que, en el presente trabajo existen limitaciones como la heterogeneidad de los instrumentos utilizados en los artículos analizados y que para futuras investigaciones la revisión tendría mayor utilidad si se incluyeran otros puntos de vista como el de los profesionales del ámbito de psicogerontología y los familiares de los residentes
