Summary - While international data indicate that world tourism continues to increase in terms of both numbers of tourists and tourist revenues, there is evidence to indicate there are significant differences between particular tourist destinations. A decline or stagnation in the tourist sector of any country with a great deal of economic dependence on tourism would be serious, but this is particularly so for small tropical island states which frequently have few apparent economic alternatives.
