Physical constraints specific to island environment. Insularity begins when an island is totally subject to the oceanic hydroclimate. It is also linked with the nature of the coast and the degree to which it has been developed. When an island community ignores the potential to open up beyond its coastal region, it drifts towards “insularism”. This idea may then be reinforced by isolation, when this becomes synonymous with the degeneration of species and emergence of endemic forms of diseases.
