From sugar to service sector : the economic development in Reunion. The contemporary economy of Reunion is the result of a collision between a traditional sugar-producing economy, which had its origins in the plantation economy of the nineteenth century, and a process of integration into the economy of France as a result of departmentalization since 1946. This economy today provides a fairly high standard of living ; industrialization on a small scale only ; exports, consisting almost entirely of sugar, on the decline, and economic activity very largely dominated by operations related to the service sector.
