Third International Trade Law Fall Update (Part 2)

For decades, the United States has been a key constituent and supporter of multilateral and regional frameworks designed to promote and enhance international commerce, such as the WTO and NAFTA. Over time, these governing arrangements have shown weaknesses, particularly in addressing mercantilist policies and practices.In response to this challenge and mindful of the impact of such practices on U.S. perennial trade deficits, the Trump administration has resorted to an array of domestic statutory remedies designed to address both unfair and fair trade practices. Among such policy shifts and their ensuing legal developments, escalating threats that could result in trade wars have triggered international negotiations and made both trade talk and practice far more interesting, if not less predictable.The Third International Trade Fall Update will focus on recent trade policy developments and will determine how they have affected and might affect the planning and practice of trade and customs law. Featuring a roundtable discussion with Professor Juscelino F. Colares and the Honorable Claire R. Kelly, Judge of the U.S. Court of International Trade, the conference will also include two panels of trade and customs counsel and officials, from Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.Panel I will address the State of the Trade World, focusing on trade policy, implementation and litigation developments. Panel II, Duty Drawback, Rules of Origin and Emerging Customs Law Issues will focus on daily practice and customs law for domestic manufacturers and importers alike, discussing developments in duty drawback, rules of origin and other emerging customs issues. Professor Colares will chair an alumni panel in the afternoon to answer student questions regarding clerkship and career opportunities in international trade law. The Honorable Judge Leo M. Gordon, Judge of the U.S. Court of International Trade, will provide closing remarks.Hosted by the Frederick K.
