A cytogenetic study was made on heavy mentally retarded patients with cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to get a glimpse of the causes of mental retardation and cerebral palsy. As the results, chromosome abnormalities were found in 8.6% of the patients. By this study, it was revealed that chromosome abnormalities contribute significantly to the etiology of cerebral palsy. The 58 cases examined in this study were admitted to National Sanatorium Kamo Hospital and Hiroshima Prefectural Handicapped Children's Hospital.
