This work aims to investigate the state of the art in test case generation for real-time systems, to analyze existing methods, and to propose future research directions in this area. We believe that a combination of design for testability, automation, and sensible test case selection is the key for verifying modern real-time systems. Existing methods for system-level test case generation for real-time systems are presented, classified, and evaluated against a real-time system model. Significant for real-time systems is that timeliness is crucial for their correctness. Our system model of the testing target adopts the event-triggered design paradigm for maximum flexibility.
