Central insulin signaling plays a key role in regulating the neuroendocrine reproductive axis. Mice exhibiting brain-specific insulin receptor gene (Insr) deletion (NIRKO mice) or diabetic insulin insufficiency display hypothalamic hypogonadism in association with absent or decreased insulin signaling.
