In 2007 the bottlenose dolphins of Doubtful Sound were reported to have been in decline for the previous 12 years. To identify and isolate potential causal factors, I began a comparative study of the resident populations in both Doubtful and Dusky Sounds, starting in 2009. The decline in Doubtful Sound appears to have stopped. At the end of 2011 there were 61 individuals in the population (CV = 1.46%), an increase of 11% since 2007. The calving seasons in 2010 and 2011 also showed improvements in the calf survival rate (2002-2009: 0.434; 95% CI: 0.360-0.508 to 2010-2011: 0.622; 95% CI: 0.435-0.830).
