The Mekong River is one of the world’s great river systems. In recent decades there has been a rapid increase in the development of hydropower projects within the Mekong Basin – a trend accompanied by significant debate and controversy. Those in favour of hydropower claim it will bring substantial economic benefits and development to the region, whilst those opposed to the apparently rampant hydropower development are concerned about the potentially significant environmental and social impacts of these developments.
