The narrator meets a young woman by the riverside one night. Her father wanted to shoot her lover, a poor fisherman called O'Reilly. Her mother sent O'Reilly a thousand pounds in gold so he could buysome land in America. Having done so, O'Reilly returns to fetch his lover, but they are both drowned as their ship gets wrecked.
