When her parents discover her love for Johnny Doyle, the heroine is locked in her bedroom. When she realizes she cannot meet Johnny at the time they'd arranged, her earrings burst, her gold rings shatter and her bosom bursts. Her mother says she will send for Johnny but it is too late. She dies and her last words are a farewell to Johnny Doyle.see Leach (1965) pp. 64-65; Peacock (1965) W13 pp 687-690
