Harnett's maternal uncle and aunt died on Gull Island in the tragedy (Willian and Brunelda Hoskins); 8 people died there and are buried in Tilt Cove. Harnett has a relic from the tragedy - a piece of a scarf belonging to her aunt, which had been recovered and given to Harnett's father. Harnett also discusses her family history: of Cornish English extraction, the Hoskins came to Tilt Cove from England to operate a mine there in the 1860s.
