Abstract This paper consists into a review of rural tourism from Romania, especially on rural areas, as a potential product on international tourism. Based only on officially accepted and published data they were shown and discussed some of most the important indices of tourism, including the number of tourists (domestic and foreigners), number of overnights in Romania mainly in rural areas, and the potential international trend for Romanian tourism for the next period of time. Analysis indicates that rural tourism is a product in a full development process; the average increase rate being more than 50% on analyzed period, but level of foreign visitors in rural areas is constantly below 15% from the total number of tourists.
