Abstract-The various technical syntheses of vitamin A and carotenoids employ only a few key reactions for the formation of the carbon-carbon bond, in particular, the Aldol condensation, the Knoevenagel condensation, the Reformatsky reaction, the Wittig condensation, and the addition of acetylides. Specific industrial examples are given, and the advantages and disadvantages of a particular reaction type are discussed. In the evaluation of a reaction the industrial point of view is emphasized. Carbon-carbon bond formation using sulfones is discussed in a similar manner although this reaction has so far not found an application in an industrial process
