In a preliminary report to the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology 3 we described how iodate and iodoacetate-treated rabbits were unsatisfactory models because the retinal damage from each of these toxic substances was nonuniform over the retinal area. Spotty areas of the retina were left unaffected by both iodate and by iodoacetate. At the suggestion of Dr. John Dowling we decided to utilize the strain of rats with hereditary retinal dystrophy, first described by Bourne, Campbell, and Tansley, 4 and studied later by Dowling and Sidman
