ABSTRACT The Fried-Jin derivation of the condition Z = 0 is re-examined making explicit use of the HNZ construction of a composite particle field. This leads to another condition for compositeness originally due to Nishijima. The latter condition is shown to have important implications concerning the vertex renormalization constants and the mass shift
