Abstract Advances in medical technology have led to increases in the life expectancy as well as increases in the number of older people, which makes population ageing an international priority in the 21st century. However, very little is known about the elderly in Nepal, one of the poorest countries of the world. Although the proportion of elderly is increasing both in absolute numbers and as a proportion of Nepal's total population, traditional family norms and values of supporting the elderly are eroding at an alarming rate. The objective of this paper is to illustrate population aging in Nepal using census data, other reports for the purpose of further research and inquiry
