Abstract This study presents a method for measuring the dimensions of 2D-objects using optical methods for edge detection. The approach is based on measuring "a scale image" to obtain an invariant factor which is then used to acquire the required geometry information from the real image. The pre-process of the object measurement can be characterized by a group technique which is called "minimizing required image information method". In this paper, the method of measurement in two steps, pre-processing and measurement will be presented. The application of this technique for reverse engineering of sheet metal parts will be demonstrated
