Pomology, Viticulture and Enology Effect of pretreatments on seed germination of Prunus laurocerasus L. (Cherry laurel)

Abstract This study was conducted to determine some pre-treatments on seed germination of Prunus laurocerasus L. (cherry laurel). Seeds were stratified after soaking in tap water or hot water or GA3 (0.5 or 1 gl -1 ) pre-treatment to seeds with endocarp or without endocarp before stratification were studied. All of pre-treatments increased the seed germination compared to control. The highest germination percentage was obtained from hot water soaked seeds after 90 days stratification. GA3 pre-treated seeds without endocarps showed higher germination percentage and shortened the stratification time of seeds without endocarp. Hot or tap water soaking and 90 days stratification was found applicable as a conclusion
