Driscoll Abstract Prehistoric monuments are a conspicuous feature of royal centres in the early medieval Celtic world. This paper argues that this interest in the past represents conscious efforts to exploit the ancient monuments for political advantage in a period when new political structures were taking shape. This paper examines the situation in Scotland and considers some of the ideological issues raised by this active appropriation of the past
