A substantial proportion of patients suffering from mitral regurgitation are denied surgery despite an indication due to an increased perioperative risk. This had led to the development of a large number of less-invasive, interventional procedures for the treatment of mitral regurgitation. The present article summarizes the diagnostic approach as well as the indications for interventional and surgical therapies for mitral regurgitation and gives an overview of novel transcatheter strategies for repair and replacement of the mitral valve
