L’argent monnayé dans les provinces nord-occidentales au IVe siècle. Circulation et usage

International audienceThis article deals with the distribution and use of silver coinage during the 4th century. The survey, the first results of which appear here, made it possible to record 200 single coin finds which are presented in a catalogue at the end of the study. The focus lies on the north-western provinces as an important area for the circulation of silver coinage; particular attention is given to the contexts. At the same time, the different distribution phases of gold coinage are considered, in order to set this study in the context of a broader monetary history. The conclusion shows that during the second half of the 4th century the movements of silver followed quite well those of gold, as far as they have been recorded. We conclude that the increase in gold coin production, particularly from Valentinian I onwards, resulted in a new dynamic in the silver coinage, which would then have supported a greater »democratization« of the yellow metal in transactions in the 4th century.Cet article s’intéresse à la diffusion et à l’usage de la monnaie d’argent au cours du IVe siècle. L’enquête, dont nous livrons ici les premiers résultats, a permis le recensement de 200 trouvailles isolées, qui sont présentées dans un cata- logue en fin d’étude. L’accent est mis sur la zone particulière que représentent plus qu’ailleurs les provinces nord-occi- dentales dans la circulation de l’argent monnayé, ce qui nous amène par ailleurs à prêter spécifiquement attention aux contextes de découvertes. Parallèlement, les différentes phases de diffusion de l’or sont examinées pour replacer cette étude dans le cadre d’une histoire monétaire plus large. Il en ressort que, au cours de la seconde moitié du IVe siècle, les mouvements de l’argent suivent assez bien ce que l’on connaît des mouvements de l’or. Nous émettons l’hypothèse que l’augmentation de la production de l’or, à partir de Valentinien Ier notamment, a pu donner un nouveau souffle à la frappe de l’argent, qui aurait alors accompagné une plus grande «démocratisation» du métal jaune dans les échanges au IVe siècle
