National liberal convention, 1948

In November of 1947, after 29 years as Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King called a convention for the August 5-7, 1948. King announced his resignation as Liberal leader there, and after three days of speeches, campaigning, and meetings, the election saw Louis St. Laurent installed as the next leader of the party and Prime Minister. This report contains details of the proceedings of each of the three days, as well as texts of the speeches delivered by leadership hopefuls and other delegates at the Convention. Newfoundland is mentioned throughout the report, as it had decided to join Canada through two referendums held in June and July of 1948, and had delegates present at the Convention. Pages 154-158 contain speeches by former Newfoundland Cabinet Minister Gordon Bradley and the man who would become the first Premier of the Province of Newfoundland, Joey Smallwood.Includes index
