Charles Pedley was a Congregational clergyman who served in St. John's from 1857-64. During his time on the island he was encouraged by Governor Alexander Bannerman to undertake a history, to which end he was given access to many government documents. Pedley's History covers the period from discovery to 1860, although it concentrates on conditions in the 19th century. The text shows tolerance for all creeds and races. The appendices contain extracts from other writers and sources, including Whitbourne, Buchan, and Cormack. (Minerva Tracy, "Pedley, Charles," Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 10.)Includes index
